Don't have a very broad family tree? This lovely lady could be your "instant ancestor". What a rich history tale you could spin of dear great-aunt Sophie (or Mabel, or Louise . . . ). Admire antique photography? This early 20thC. photo portrait by acclaimed photographer, George Kossuth of Wheeling, is the perfect item for your collection.
George Kossuth, the grandson of Hungarians who fled the 1848 revolution in their homeland, had only an 8th grade education but went on to become a renowned portrait photographer who was awarded the Craftsmen and Masters honors from the Photographers Association of America. He was elected as Chairman of the Board of that professional organization and later taught in its Winona School of Photography. His studio was founded in 1909 and from the appearance of this unidentified subject, we believe this portrait dates from the first years of his career. The piece is nicely matted and glazed in a tortoise shell grained wood veneer frame which we believe to be from the period. The mat is hallmarked with his studio's logo, his name, and Wheeling, W. Va.
Some of Mr. Kossuth's most well known work is featured in a West Virginia University collection and includes portraits of Pablo Casals, Carl Sandburg, John Phillip Sousa, Eleanor Steber, Richard Struass, and Richard Nixon.
Dimensions: overall, 5.4"W x 10.5"H; image, 2.8"W x 4.5"H.
Condition of the photograph, glass, and mat are excellent. There is minor damage/separation at the lower left corner of the frame but it does not detract from the appearance.
Free local pickup; otherwise shipped via economical parcel delivery.
