This charmingly rustic match strike / vesta would make a great addition to any Farmhouse or Rustic European decor. Fabricated of red earthenware (terracotta), this piece was designed to hold wood matches in it acorn-form reservoir which then would be struck on the rough circular plate surrounding the matchkeep.. Ready to hang with an integral hole.
Marked en verso "A.H. Hews & Co., No Cambridge Mass.". This company, founded in 1765, grew to be the largest terracotta planter manufacturer in the world during the Victorian gardening frenzy of the late 1800's.
Dimensions: 3.4ʺW × 3.4ʺD × 2ʺH
Good antique condition; glaze chips on the rim (as shown) and near the hanging hole on the back (as shown). We believe the front chips could be easily hidden by infilling with matte black paint, but we leave it to the buyer whether to do so or not.
