French & Italian Decorative Plates, Set of 2
Two Mediterranean chic, blue & white hand-painted earthenware pieces discovered at an antique market in Montpellier, France.
The larger item, (9" Dia.) is a faience plate with a central image of the Eglise St-Felix (Sigean France) surrounded by a reticulated scalloped rim adorned with floral and flourish decoration and royal blue edging. There are holes on the back footer from which to hang the plate.
The smaller bowl, (7.5" Dia.), features a center medallion of a gentleman in traditional costume representing one of the many districts (contradas) of Siena, Italy. The highly decorative scalloped rim is painted with flourishes; the mark of "Rampini Gubbio", a Tuscan fabricator of hand-painted pottery.
