This lovely, atmospheric watercolor is a wonderful example of the work of the talented and well known artist Rod Goebel, (1946-1993) a member of the prestigious National Academy of Western Artists and founding member of the Taos Six Society of Artists, a group which included other famous Southwestern artists Robert Daughters, Ray Vinella, Walt Gonske, Julian Robles, and Ron Barsano. Goebel is represented by numerous galleries and his work is featured at The Museum of Fine Arts in New Mexico, The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Philbrook Art Museum, Museum of New Mexico, Museum of Northern Arizona, Museum of the Southwest, and other art institutions as well as being held in the corporate collections of Wells Fargo Bank and Southland Corporation and private collections nationwide. Southwest Art magazine highlighted Goebel and his paintings in its August 1980 edition .
This piece, titled, "Taos Fields," features an image of the mountains surrounding Taos, New Mexico. The cumulus clouds, harbingers of the typical summer afternoon storms of the region, are rendered in an amazingly light but realistic manner with the mountains reflecting the brilliant blue of the southwestern skies. The image, 13.75" x 10.25", is watercolor on board mounted under glass with a white mat and framed in a dark stained wooden frame measuring 15" x 12". All are in very good condition with no signs of damage or restoration.
This piece is unsigned but it is accompanied (en verso) by a copy of the letter of authentication dated 1/2/2009 on Goebel Fine Art letterhead and states, "To Whom It May Concern, This is a letter of authentication with the intent to authenticate this watercolor as an original by Rod Goebel. Cedar Goebel [signature]. Also included (en verso) is a copy of letter which reads: "To Whom It May Concern, This watercolor painting, a 13 3/4 inch by 10 1/4 w/c on paper, is entitled 'Taos Fields' and was gifted to Janet Zmolek by the artist Rod Goebel, who painted it in 1980. Donna Goebel, wife of Rod Goebel".
